CMMI V3.0 · Benchmark Appraisal

CMMI Level Audit & Appraisal Readiness (Maturity Level 2–5)

A CMMI maturity level is a prerequisite for most government and large-enterprise IT tenders. Vyapari Solutions builds process capability that survives an appraisal — and that your delivery teams actually use afterwards.

Overview

What CMMI actually measures

CMMI V3.0 is a capability model, not a checklist. It assesses whether your organisation performs, plans, tracks and improves work consistently — across engineering, service delivery, supplier management, people management and security, depending on the views you adopt.

Maturity levels are cumulative: Level 3 requires everything in Level 2 plus organisation-wide standard processes. Level 4 adds statistical management of critical subprocesses, and Level 5 adds causal analysis and measurable performance improvement against business objectives.

  • Level 2 — Managed: work is planned, tracked and controlled at project level
  • Level 3 — Defined: a tailored organisational standard process governs all projects; the level most tenders require
  • Level 4 — Quantitatively Managed: process performance baselines and models drive statistical control
  • Level 5 — Optimizing: performance is continuously improved against quantitative business objectives

Scope of work

What the engagement covers

We work through your actual delivery data — projects, defects, effort, schedule — rather than writing a process manual detached from how work happens.

Gap analysis against V3.0

Current practice assessed against every practice area in the target view and level, with an evidence gap register.

Process architecture

Organisational standard process, tailoring guidelines, lifecycle models and a process asset library your teams can navigate.

Measurement & analysis

Metrics programme, baselines and — for ML4/5 — process performance models built on real historical data.

Pilot & institutionalisation

Pilot projects run under the new process, with coaching, reviews and adoption tracking across delivery teams.

Evidence preparation

Artefact mapping per practice area, per project instance, structured the way the appraisal team will sample it.

Mini appraisal & Benchmark

A full dry-run readiness appraisal, findings closure, then coordination with a certified Lead Appraiser for the Benchmark appraisal.

Applicability

Who pursues CMMI

CMMI is most valuable where delivery predictability is contractually important, and where buyers use maturity level as a shortlisting filter.

  • IT services and product engineering firms bidding for government and PSU tenders
  • Global capability centres standardising delivery across multiple sites
  • Defence, aerospace and space suppliers with process maturity clauses in contracts
  • BPO and managed services organisations adopting the CMMI Services view
  • Organisations scaling past 150 engineers where tribal knowledge stops working

Tender eligibility

Meet the ML3 or ML5 prerequisite that filters bidders before technical evaluation even begins.

Predictable delivery

Estimation baselines and defect containment reduce schedule slippage and rework cost, not just appraisal scores.

Faster onboarding

A real process asset library cuts the time a new engineer takes to become productive.

Integrates with ISO

CMMI process areas are mapped to ISO 9001, ISO 20000-1 and ISO 27001 so audits share evidence.

Our approach

How the engagement runs

  • Readiness diagnostic

Target view and level agreed, current maturity assessed, and an appraisal timeline built backwards from your tender dates.

  • Process definition

Standard processes, templates, checklists and tailoring rules co-designed with your delivery leads.

  • Deployment & coaching

Pilots, training, mentoring and periodic health checks to move from documented to institutionalised.

  • Evidence & mini appraisal

Artefact collection per instance, then a dry-run appraisal that surfaces weaknesses while there is time to fix them.

  • Benchmark appraisal

Lead Appraiser coordination, appraisal team preparation, on-site support and post-appraisal improvement plan.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • CMMI V3.0 gap analysis against the target view and maturity level
  • Organisational standard process set with tailoring guidelines
  • Process asset library, templates, checklists and lifecycle definitions
  • Measurement programme with baselines and (ML4/5) performance models
  • Practice-area evidence matrix mapped to project instances
  • Mini appraisal report with weakness closure plan
  • Benchmark appraisal coordination and post-appraisal improvement roadmap
Questions

CMMI Level Audit — frequently asked questions

Technically it is an appraisal rating, not a certificate — but ISACA publishes the result and issues an appraisal certificate valid for three years. Tenders normally ask for the published appraisal record, which we make sure lists the correct organisational unit and scope.

Six to nine months for a mid-sized organisation with reasonable existing process discipline. The pacing constraint is institutionalisation: appraisal teams sample real project artefacts, so you need projects that have genuinely run under the new process for several months.

Levels are cumulative, so a Level 5 appraisal covers Levels 2, 3, 4 and 5 practice areas. You can appraise directly at 5 without appraising at 3 first, but you must have the quantitative history — process performance baselines and models need real data over time, typically 12–18 months of disciplined measurement.

No. You define an organisational unit — a business line, a delivery centre, a set of projects — and the rating applies to that unit and the sampled projects. Scoping the unit correctly is one of the highest-leverage decisions in the whole engagement.

V3.0 restructured the model around practice areas grouped into domains, added a Safety and Security view, strengthened the People and Data Management areas, and revised appraisal rules including required sampling and the Sustainment appraisal option. Appraisals are now conducted against V3.0.

We prepare you and run the mini appraisal. The Benchmark appraisal must be led by a certified Lead Appraiser from an ISACA Partner organisation, which we coordinate. Keeping preparation and appraisal separate is what keeps the result credible.
